Mechanism of action

As the level of nitric oxide (NO) in the cavernous body increases, sildenafil binds to cGMP receptors, resulting in an increase in cGMP flow. The whole process relaxes the smooth muscles of the penis. When the arteries relax, they can improve blood flow in the spongy tissues of the penis, which causes a hard and long-lasting erection.

Instructions for use

  • The drug is taken orally about 60 minutes before sexual intercourse and washed down with water.
  • Alcohol is permissible only in minimal volumes (a glass of wine).
  • Fatty food can slow down the effect of the drug, so you’d better take a pill on an empty stomach;
  • The maximum dose of Viagra is 100 mg per day.

Overdose

Experiments show that exceeding the maximum recommended dose of sildenafil, the risk of side effects increases. In this situation, symptomatic therapy should be used as a treatment.   • Treatment with ritonavir;
  • Complex forms of cardiovascular diseases, including: recent heart attack or stroke, heart failure, angina pectoris, hypotension, hypertension, arrhythmia, which threatens a man’s life;
  • Vision problems (partial loss of vision, optic neuropathy);
  • Hereditary retinitis pigmentosa.

There are also cases when tablets containing sildenafil must be used with caution:

  • Anatomical deformation of the penis (Peyronie’s disease, angulation and cavernous fibrosis);
  • Diseases that can contribute to the progression of priapism (these include myeloma, anemia and leukemia);
  • Diseases in which bleeding is possible;
  • Ulcers of the stomach and duodenum in acute form;
  • Liver dysfunctions;
  • Severe renal failure;
  • The use of α-adrenoreceptor blockers.

Interaction with other drugs

Studies of sildenafil at a dose of 50 mg did not confirm that the latter increases the hypertensive or hypotensive effect of alcohol in male volunteers and all indicators were within the arithmetic error.
